Dilemma Files — Privacy Policy
Effective: 31 October 2026
Who we are
Dilemma Files is an iPhone app made by Puncix Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17523805), registered office 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, United Kingdom, WC2H 9JQ. Puncix Ltd is the controller of the personal data described in this policy. Contact: support@puncix.com.
The short version
The app itself does not collect personal data. The only personal data we ever receive is an email you choose to send us (see Problem reports). There is no account, no server of ours, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app makes no network requests of its own. What you read, choose and set stays on your phone.
What stays on your device
The app keeps the following on your phone, in its own storage, so it can work:
- your decisions (the case, the option you chose, the date, and the signature and ink you signed with), your reading progress and your streak calendar;
- your settings: language, paper colour, reading mode (line by line or paragraph by paragraph), signature style and ink colour, reminder on/off and time, sound on/off, and a few flags such as whether you have seen the introduction, whether you have unlocked the Desk and whether the app has asked you for a rating;
- a backup copy of the same, so a failed save does not lose your record. While you sign, the app also keeps a short note of the signature (the case, the option you chose, the date and time, and whether it was the day's own case), so that a signature is not lost if the app closes before it is saved. The note is deleted as soon as the signature is saved, or the next time the app opens if it closed first;
- the most recent error the app caught (time, place, message and a short technical trace), or a note that saved data was repaired, kept only so you can include it in a problem report. It never contains your decisions or the case text;
- repair notes: the app tries to make one each time it finds a problem with your saved decisions. It keeps the first and the most recent ones, up to five in all. Each note holds the saved copies exactly as they were found, so it can contain complete, readable copies of your decisions. Settings > Erase your record removes them, and so does deleting the app. The Erase on the screen that appears when the app cannot open your record keeps them.
We cannot see any of this. It does not leave your phone unless you choose to send something (see below). Your iPhone or iCloud backup may include the app's data, as it does for most apps; that is handled by Apple under your own settings.
Reminders
If you turn on the daily reminder, the app asks iOS for permission to show notifications. It is off by default and the permission is asked only when you turn it on. Reminders are scheduled on your phone as local notifications; they do not use a push server and nothing is sent to us or anyone else. The reminder shows a line from the day's case, which may be visible on your lock screen. It is created on your phone and not sent anywhere. You can hide previews in iOS Settings > Notifications.
Problem reports and corrections
"Report a problem" opens a draft in your own mail app. The draft contains the app version, your operating system and its version, and the last error record. You can read and edit it. Nothing is sent unless you press send. If you do, we receive your email address, any name you include, your message and that technical information, and we use them only to answer you and fix the problem.
The same applies to emails about a correction or an objection to a record (the "Is something in this record wrong? Tell us." link, or any email to us). You write these yourself; the draft names only the case, the app language and the app version, never your choices. They may include a claim about yourself, for example that a record is about you. We use them only to answer you and to correct or remove what is wrong in the record, and we keep them for 12 months.
People named in the records
The records describe real people, some of them living. Puncix Ltd is the controller of the information about them that we publish in the records.
What we publish comes only from published sources: court rulings, official inquiries and parliamentary records, news reports and the people’s own accounts, as they stood when we wrote them. Some people are named; some are described without a name, and a description can still point to a person.
We do not contact people before publishing.
If a record is about you and you believe it is wrong, incomplete or should not be here, write to support@puncix.com. We review every request within 7 days. While we check, we may take the case out, and we correct or remove what is wrong.
When we withdraw a case, it is removed from the next version of the app, including from your list of past decisions. Phones that have not updated may still show it.
Legal basis
Support and correction emails are processed because you ask us to act on them: we need your message and email address to answer you and to fix or correct what you raise. Under UK GDPR this rests on our legitimate interests in answering the people who write to us and keeping the records accurate, and on steps taken at your request. The app itself processes no personal data on our side. Purchases are processed by Apple under its own terms and privacy policy; we are not the controller of your payment data.
Where your data goes
The only data that reaches us is an email you choose to send. Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., United States), which handles email for puncix.com, passes it on to our mailbox at Gmail (Google LLC, United States), where we read it. We do not pass it on to anyone else, and we do not use it for advertising or analytics. We keep support emails for 12 months and then delete them.
Sharing
The share screen shows a card with the case’s situation, never your choice. You can send an invitation through the iOS share sheet, or copy the same text to the clipboard. Either happens only when you tap. The invitation holds the case title, its one-line dilemma and the option headings. It also holds the line “I signed. What would you do?” and a link to puncix.com. The app does not send the invitation anywhere itself: what happens to it, or to a screenshot, is up to you and the app you choose. You can send yourself a plain-text copy of your decisions from Settings; it goes only where you choose.
Purchases
The app offers a one-time unlock. Payment is processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive your payment details, only what Apple tells the app about whether the purchase was made.
Apple diagnostics
If you have chosen in iOS settings to share analytics or crash reports with app developers, Apple may provide us with anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. We do not control this and cannot identify you from it.
Children
The app is not directed at anyone below the age rating shown on its App Store product page. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has written to us, email us and we will delete the message.
Your choices and deleting your data
- Settings > Erase your record removes your decisions, progress, calendar, the last error record and the repair notes from the device. Your settings stay, except that the introduction is shown again. The Erase on the screen that appears when the app cannot open your record keeps the repair notes and the last error record. A later Settings > Erase your record removes them. Deleting the app removes everything the app stored, including settings.
- Turn the reminder off in the app, or in iOS Settings > Notifications.
- To have us delete an email you sent us, write to support@puncix.com.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you (in practice, the emails you sent us), ask us to correct or delete it, and object to our use of it. Write to support@puncix.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). If you live in the EU, you can instead complain to your local data protection authority. We would like the chance to put things right first, but you do not have to contact us before complaining.
US state privacy note
We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising or profiling. Because the app collects no personal data, there is normally nothing to access or delete, but residents of US states with privacy laws may send any rights request (access, deletion, correction) to support@puncix.com; it will cover only emails you have sent us.
This website
puncix.com is served by Cloudflare, Inc. (United States), acting as our processor. When you open a page, Cloudflare records basic technical data (your IP address, the time of the request and your browser type) to deliver the site and keep it secure. The site sets no cookies and loads no analytics, fonts or scripts from other services. The website as a whole is covered by the Puncix privacy policy at puncix.com/privacy.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change affects how your data is used, we will say so in the app.
